Choosing Your First Convention

You’ve decided you want to go to a convention, but you don’t know which one to go to first.  That’s okay, if you’re new to the scene choosing a convention can be a scary thing.  As I mentioned, my first convention was Anime North. I found out by word of mouth of its existence.  From there the world opened and I learned there are a lot more conventions than just Anime North.

It was almost frightening to choose from there.  I did what any person would do, I researched!  I found UpComingCons, a website that lists all conventions around the world!

From there it’s all about choosing what type of convention you want to go to.  There are a lot of different types of cons, some of the main types are described below:

Anime – A celebration of Japanese culture.  Anime and manga are cartoon and comic styles of Japan.

Comics – Affectionately referred to as “comic-cons” (coined by San Diego Comic-Con) comic conventions celebrate comic books and comic book culture.

Gaming – Celebrates and boasts all gaming enthusiasts (board games, video games, etc.)

There are a lot more than these four types, but for the cosplay world, these are the most popular.  After researching, it’s all about finding your niche.  What are your specific interests?  When you’ve found your interests, this will help narrow down which convention you want to go to.

Your first convention will become special to you.  You might find yourself going back year after year and making new connections who will share your interests.  Have fun and make the memories that are sure to last a lifetime.

  1. Cassie, I loved this post! I went to Fan Expo one year and was amazed at what I saw. Maybe you can write some tips for newbies on what to expect during their first convention, or is there’s etiquette that should be followed.

    1. Thank you Hilary! I actually had planned on doing posts like that and now you’ve given me another topic to add to my list!

  2. Cassie, you have a great blog! I imagine that being new to cosplay and conventions would feel a little daunting to say the least. Throughout your posts, you’ve managed to break down all the different aspects of conventions in a very accessible and friendly way. Can’t wait to learn more 🙂

    1. Thank you, Tandi, it’s certainly a daunting thing at first, I’m glad the message I was trying to achieve came out the exact way I needed it to. 🙂

  3. Great Post! In spite of being a big Anime fan, I had no idea about Anime North. Would definitely pay a visit to it now. Thanks

    1. I got very lucky in high school in discovering Anime North. It’s definitely worth taking a weekend to go to! The next one comes up this year in May! 🙂 Hope to see you there!

  4. Fantastic article Cassie, makes me want to go for a convention. What would you suggest for a first timer, Anime or Comic books because I like the idea of both? 🙂

    1. If you want a more well-rounded experience a Comic convention is where to go. They have a bit of everything. If you’re a huge Anime fan then attending an Anime convention is more your style. My first was an Anime Con, it let me focus on just one side of my passion. Hope that helps! I’m more than willing to talk more in person if you want some more help!

  5. Loved it Cassie. Would also like to agree with Hilary… I think I’d feel so overwhelmed and unsure that tips would be really beneficial.

Great post, can’t wait to read the others.
